“I do believe we’ll have an outstanding one-week long event, courses and surrounding landscapes are simply breath-taking, World’s best athletes will all turn up here and as organising group, we mean to offer different kind of side events in order to entertain everybody”, OC President Gianni Mazzeni claims.
Trentino and Veneto regions in Northern Italy will host the 2014 World Orienteering and Trail Orienteering Championships (WOC-WTOC) from 5 to 12 July, and OC President Gianni Mazzeni enthusiastically keeps counting down to the first time ever Italy houses the top event.
“Both areas of Trentino and Veneto – Mazzeni added – might be viewed as the cradle of orienteering disciplines in our country. Orienteers will have the chance to explore the Lavarone, Folgaria, Luserna and Asiago mountainous and hilly plateaus, the Valsugana area with its lakes, and they will all visit the cities of Venice, with its canals, bridges and islands, and Trento, a real pearl in the Alps.”
Mazzeni and his committee, together with volunteers, institutions (Provincia Autonoma di Trento and Regione Veneto above all) and sponsors, keep working hard so as to offer a sensational event from any point of observation. “One of the most delicate aspects – Mazzeni said – and a most difficult one to deal with is the several sites the Worlds will take place into. It is almost like organising two World events I’d say, but, as IOF pointed out since the very beginning – and they have been supporting us strongly for this reason too – this is a fantastic opportunity for us to show the World our natural and urban beauties and what we are capable of.” Also thanks to RAI national television, that will broacast the WOC-WTOC 2014 daily, and four live programs in several European countries already scheduled during the week.
In less than two and a half months, the WOC-WTOC 2014 will kick off in Venice and according to the updated Trail-O preliminary entries count, over 100 orienteers from 23 nations – two more than the 2013 WTOC in Finland – already secured a bib, plus further subscriptions are awaited after the recent EOC-ETOC in Portugal. Countries that usually do not appear in international competitions, as Belgium, China and Spain, will also take part in the WTOC 2014.
Venice will host the start of the promo event ‘5 Days of Italy’ and the third entry deadline is the 30th April. On the official 5 Days Of Italy (WOC Tour) web site, the Accommodation Survey is available, a brief questionnaire the OC set in order to collect opinions from all registered orienteers to the 5 Days of Italy, and better organise all accommodation services in Trentino and Veneto areas next summer.
